Bicycle Helmets Save Lives, wear one. We do!

Since its inception, bike patrol programs have become popular in the pre-hospital Emergency Medical Services (EMS) community around the country.

Cost effectiveness and newfound mobility allow mountain bikes to bridge the gap between foot patrol and ambulance which can mean the difference between life and death in congested or crowded conditions.

Experience has shown that citizens are more likely to approach EMS personnel on a bike than in an ambulance. Also, those on bikes are better able to use all of their senses to detect and address problems.

Roselle Park's EMS (RPEMS) bike patrol is used primarily for special events that have a possibility to attract large crowds.

In 2001, when the borough celebrated its centennial, many events were held that attracted large numbers of people.

Anticipating the need for rapid response in these situations, RPEMS deployed bike teams consisting of two specially trained Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's) along with its regular ambulance crews.  The combination of these units proved to be very effective in providing pre-hospital care to the sick and injured.

RPEMS bike teams have been used for many other occasions during the past three years also with very effective results.
